I was trained in the traditional ways of working with Mapacho, also known as Nicotiana rustica, and it’s one of the medicines I hold in the highest regard. To me, Mapacho is not just a plant — it’s an intelligent, protective, and deeply grounding spirit that’s been walking with humanity for thousands of years. When used intentionally, Mapacho clears the noise, reconnects us to our bodies, and prepares us for deeper healing. But it must be approached with respect, knowledge, authenticity, integrity, and reverence — not casually or recreationally.
One of the first things I help people understand is the difference between Mapacho and the tobacco found in cigarettes. They are not the same — not even close.
Nicotiana Rustica vs. Commercial Tobacco
Most commercial tobacco today comes from Nicotiana tabacum, a variety that’s been genetically modified, chemically treated, and heavily processed. Cigarettes often contain over 600 additives, many of which become toxic when burned — formaldehyde, arsenic, and ammonia among them.
Mapacho, on the other hand, is pure. It’s Nicotiana rustica, a wild strain that contains up to 9 times more natural nicotine, and yet, when used in traditional ways — including purges, smoke prayers, or dieta — it is not addictive and doesn’t carry the same toxicity. This is tobacco in its true form: a powerful ally, not a toxin.
In the Amazon, Mapacho is known as a master teacher and protector. It’s used to clear heavy energy, protect sacred spaces, call in ancestral spirits, and center the body before or after ceremonies. The Mapacho purge is one of the most direct and powerful ways to engage with its spirit.
What Is a Mapacho Purge?
A Mapacho purge is a traditional Amazonian practice where a tea made from Mapacho leaves is consumed on an empty stomach. It is a cleansing ceremony, not a hallucinogenic or visionary one. Its purpose is to purge the physical, emotional, mental, and energetic systems.
After drinking the brew, the body typically responds within minutes, purging through various ways including vomiting, sweating, or bowel movements. In my experience, people come out of the purge feeling lighter, clearer, and more centered — like they’ve been unplugged from chaos and reconnected to themselves. My purges have left me grounded, connected, and free from the constant chatter in my mind.
I hold this medicine with care. It’s not something I give to everyone, and it’s never something I give without a proper screening, intention-setting, and preparation process. In the right container, Mapacho knows exactly what to do.
Why People Choose a Mapacho Purge
Here are some of the reasons people feel called to this medicine:
Energetic clearing: Mapacho helps release spiritual and emotional baggage — the weight we often can’t see but always feel.
Nervous system reset: The nicotine interacts with acetylcholine receptors, which may support memory, focus, and calming the mind (Dani & Harris, 2005).
Respiratory support: Traditionally used to open the lungs, clear mucus, and help people reconnect to their breath.
Grounding: For those who are energetically scattered or overly mental, Mapacho brings presence back to the body.
Preparation for ceremony: Often used before other medicines like Ayahuasca or Kambo to clear the channel and prepare the spirit.
And honestly, many people simply feel called. There’s often no mental explanation at first — just a deep knowing that this plant has something to teach.
Contraindications + Who Should Not Do This Work
Mapacho is strong. It’s not for everyone — and that’s okay. There are certain situations where I will not offer this medicine, including:
Pregnancy or breastfeeding
Serious heart conditions or high blood pressure
Those on certain medications, especially MAOIs or antidepressants
Unstable mental health conditions such as schizophrenia or active psychosis
If you’re ever unsure, we talk. I’ll never offer a purge without a thorough conversation to assess where you are physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Risks + Why Integrity Matters
There is a risk of nicotine toxicity if the medicine is taken improperly — which is why you should never attempt a Mapacho purge on your own. Symptoms can include nausea, dizziness, or fainting. When I hold space for this work, I monitor dosage, timing, and how your body responds in real-time. I’ve been trained in both the physical protocols and spiritual care needed to work with this plant responsibly.
Energetically, Mapacho does not sugarcoat. It brings up truth. You may cry, shake, feel raw or exposed — but that’s how release works. That’s how healing works. This is why the container matters just as much as the medicine itself.
Why This Medicine Has Lasted Thousands of Years
Mapacho has been used for over 3,000 years in cultures across South and Central America. It’s been found in ancient pipes and burial offerings, and it’s still the most widely used plant in Amazonian shamanism today.
It’s considered the "father spirit" in many traditions — not because it’s masculine in an aggressive way, but because it provides structure, boundaries, and protection. It holds space for us to do our deeper work.
When I work with Mapacho, I’m not just serving a plant tea — I’m inviting in a sacred intelligence that knows how to clear what no longer serves, and help you remember who you are beneath the noise.
